Who we serve / Retail & local shops

Start with the team behind the counter.

Benefit Experts helps Washington employers turn workforce needs into a benefits plan. A useful retail benefits plan connects the budget with full-time staff, part-time schedules, seasonal hiring, and the time employees have to compare choices.

Start with these three decisions.

Tell us your regular staffing, seasonal peaks, store hours, and starting budget.

01

Staffing patterns

Use hours and plan rules to review eligibility.

02

A manageable budget

Separate employer spending from employee premiums and costs when using care.

03

Store schedules

Make enrollment information available beyond a single meeting.

Count part-time hours correctly

For ACA employer-size calculations, total non-full-time hours each month, cap each person at 120, and divide by 120. Add monthly full-time employees and average the prior year. Two people working 20 hours per week are not simply one ACA full-time equivalent.

Build a deliberate starting package

Compare medical, dental, vision, and voluntary options against the budget and plan eligibility. Employee-paid supplemental coverage can add a choice, but it does not replace major medical insurance and it still involves administration. Confirm contribution and participation terms for the actual plan.

A practical example · illustrative

A shop with weekend staff

Six non-full-time employees at 80 hours each in a month contribute 480 ÷ 120 = 4 FTEs for that month. That count helps determine employer status; it does not itself make those six employees eligible for coverage.

Coverage to compare

Availability, eligibility, and benefits depend on the proposed plan and its current terms.

Medical coverage
Compare options for eligible staff and explain family premiums separately.
Dental and vision
Review networks, annual limits, waiting periods, and services covered.
Voluntary coverage
Explain premiums and benefit triggers so employees can make an informed choice.

From comparison to enrollment

We help connect the benefits decision with the people using and managing the plan.

  1. 01 / PLAN

    Map the needs

Tell us your regular staffing, seasonal peaks, store hours, and starting budget.

  2. 02 / COMPARE

    Review the tradeoffs

Compare actual plan costs, access, contributions, and the questions payroll or specialist advisers need to resolve.

  3. 03 / SUPPORT

    Help the team enroll

We provide group, individual, and live virtual education, including shifts, multiple visits, new hires, and support after enrollment with the session scope confirmed before enrollment for client teams.

Before you get started

Should we use the longest waiting period allowed?

Choose a compliant rule that fits your hiring goals and plan terms. A longer wait is not automatically the right choice for retail, and a full-time hire should not automatically enter variable-hour measurement.

What administration is included?

Employee Navigator is available and customized at no extra cost for group clients who want it. Benefit Experts trains company administrators to enter new hires and terminations; Benefit Experts handles carrier changes. We coordinate third-party COBRA administrators that send and track notices. Vendor fees may apply, with waivers for some groups based on size and benefits package.
