Benefit Experts
A group medical option

Offer your 1099 team a medical benefits conversation.

A business can work with 1099 contractors and still have a group medical option to explore. Benefit Experts helps qualifying Washington businesses review the Self-Funded Program through Nationwide for their 1099 teams.

If conventional employee eligibility rules do not fit your workforce, bring us your actual business structure and roster. We review the Nationwide option, identify who can participate and compare the medical benefits and funding arrangement before enrollment.

The focus is business-sponsored group medical coverage. We discuss the proposed plan's doctor visits, hospital care, prescriptions, deductible and out-of-pocket costs, along with the responsibilities of sponsoring the plan.

Three common business models

Build the review around the people you work with.

These are business situations to review, rather than examples of automatic eligibility.

Hair salons and independent stylists

Booth renters, stylists and a payroll team may work side by side.

Identify the business sponsoring the plan, how stylists and booth renters are affiliated with it, and who wants medical coverage. We review those relationships, participant locations and how contributions and payments would be handled. Enrollment should fit around appointments and the salon's busiest weeks.

Real estate agencies and commissioned agents

Make medical benefits part of the conversation with your agents.

Bring the agency structure, agent affiliations and any W-2 office staff. We compare household costs, provider access and the proposed contribution arrangement. Because commission income can vary, the ongoing payment and collection process needs to be clear before agents enroll.

Trucking companies and contract drivers

Review payroll drivers, owner-operators and contract drivers separately.

A roster should show how drivers are connected to the business and where they live. Then we check the proposed plan's provider access near home, routine care along regular routes and rules for care away from home. Enrollment and follow-up need a practical process for drivers who are between runs.

How the arrangement works

Compare the medical plan and the funding together.

Level funding is a form of self-funding. The arrangement combines scheduled claims funding, administration and stop-loss insurance. The business establishes the medical benefit plan; Nationwide provides the program's stop-loss support through the applicable insurance arrangement. We identify the actual plan sponsor, administrator and stop-loss insurer in the proposal.

Review the scheduled payments and separate fees alongside the network, prescription coverage and member costs. Also examine stop-loss terms, claim obligations, enrollment changes, renewal and what happens when the arrangement ends. A scheduled monthly payment does not eliminate every potential liability, and the budget should not assume a surplus refund.

Our level-funded health plan guide explains the funding questions in more detail. The quote and contract questions help organize the proposal review.

Start with business details

What to bring to a 1099 group medical review.

  • Your business type, Washington location and the states where participants live.
  • Approximate numbers of owners, W-2 staff and 1099 workers, listed separately.
  • How contractors are affiliated with the business and how many may want coverage.
  • Current medical coverage, any renewal date and your preferred start date.
  • Your contribution budget and proposed method for collecting participant payments.
  • Who will handle enrollment, joining or leaving the group, and ongoing questions.

Use the existing contact form and mention 1099 group medical review. Start with the business information and approximate counts. We will explain the appropriate private intake for any census or underwriting information needed later.

Keep Social Security numbers, tax forms, diagnoses and medical histories out of the general inquiry. Provider and prescription questions can be handled through an agreed private follow-up.

From review to enrollment

Confirm the group, compare the plan, then explain it.

Review the business and roster

Confirm the business relationships, participant locations and the program's eligibility and documentation requirements.

STEP 02

Compare the actual proposal

Review coverage, scheduled funding, contributions, underwriting and the plan's contractual responsibilities.

STEP 03

Prepare enrollment

Once the arrangement is accepted, explain the choices, payment process, effective date and contacts for ongoing help.

1099 group medical questions

What business owners ask.

Can I offer group health insurance to my 1099 employees?

Yes, qualifying 1099 workers can be considered for group medical coverage through the Nationwide level-funded program we review. We confirm your business and participant eligibility under the applicable program before enrollment. People often search for “1099 employees”; coverage eligibility and worker classification are separate questions.

Is this a group medical plan or supplemental coverage?

This service concerns a business-sponsored, self-funded group medical benefit plan with separate stop-loss insurance. We review the medical benefits, exclusions, network and member costs in the actual proposal and plan documents.

What if most or all of our team is paid on 1099s?

Tell us the number of 1099 workers, any W-2 staff and the ownership roles. We review the Nationwide option for that actual structure and confirm the applicable group and participant requirements. Do not assume a minimum headcount or a W-2 requirement from a different product applies to this proposal.

Will every stylist, agent or driver qualify?

Eligibility depends on the specific program, business relationships, participant states and underwriting. A profession or tax form alone does not establish acceptance. We confirm which people and business arrangement the quoted program will consider.

Will everyone be able to keep their doctors?

Check the exact plan and provider arrangement, rather than relying on the Nationwide name. We review the requested doctors, hospitals, prescriptions and service areas. Trucking teams should also review routine care and emergency access away from home.

Does level funding guarantee savings or a refund?

No. Compare the actual proposal and contract. Costs and employer obligations depend on the arrangement, and any unused-fund credit or refund depends on its terms and results.
